Proposition 8 passes

A sad addendum to the worldwide euphoria after Obama’s win – among dozens of ballot initiatives (referenda) that were also decided upon, Californians voted to change the law so that gay couples can no longer marry, after their Supreme Court had found the current laws meant it should be allowed.

All is not lost, however. There will be a legal challenge to the vote, arguing that such a fundamental change to a group’s rights requires constitutional change, not merely legislative change, and thus the vote should be null and void.
